Title: The Lost Sentinel: The Silent Sea Chronicles, Book One

Author: Suzanne Rogerson

Narrator: George Ellington

My Review

Tei finds herself cast into a new land, away from her father, friends, and the only home she has known since she was a young child. In this new land, she is stalked by danger, and is charged with finding the next leader of her new homeland. Will she be able to complete her mission and at what cost to her already wounded heart?

Broagan just wants to live and work on his farm, but an unexpected visit from his father shortly before he passes changes the direction of his future. Can he change the bigoted way the Assembly is headed by himself? Who is this young beauty he has found and why is he so attracted to her?

This fast-paced fantasy story has multiple view points that converge as war between those with magic and those without looms. The Lost Sentinel is filled with action and adventure.

Tei is hands down one of my favorite characters in this novel. Her journey in the story is what captivated my attentions most.

While I enjoyed the numerous other well-developed characters, I found myself not as engaged when listening to other POV’s. I just wanted to get back to Tei’s story.

But I seriously think it is just me, because I enjoyed Rogerson’s writing overall. The fight scenes are great and I think she draws readers into the story easily. I was invested from the first chapter. I was just really invested in Tei.

There are many deaths in this novel, but I feel the overall theme is rebirth as we see the magical characters attempt to overcome the fractures in their communities and try to bring back the magic to their lands while threats from outside lands and non magical people grow.

“…Its causing you pointless heartache to avoid destiny when you have no control over it. No one can escape it and we can’t protect those we love from it either.”

The Lost Sentinel Book One

If one quote could sumize this novel, I believe the above is it. It encapsulates everything I felt while reading. From Tei’s perspective, every heartbreak and tragic loss she has to overcome is, I feel, in this quote.

Another enjoyable aspect of this fantasy novel is the narration. George Ellington as narrator for The Lost Sentinel is absolutely wonderful. His narration brings the authors writing to life and immerses listeners in the story.

I happily recommend The Lost Sentinel: The Silent Sea Cronicles to all fantasy readers. This is a wonderful start to this trilogy, and I can’t wait for the book two.

If you are sensitive to animal deaths, there is one scene that is extremely sad. It is not overly descriptive, but instead is written in a way that is heartbreaking. (It was sad.) Another example of Rogerson’s great writing.

My Rating

4 out of 5 stars

The Lost Sentinel Book 1 – Silent Sea Chronicles

The magical island of Kalaya is dying, along with its Sentinel.
The Assembly controls Kalaya. Originally set up to govern, they now persecute those with magic and exile them to the Turrak Mountains.

Tei, a tailor’s daughter, has always hidden her magic, but when her father’s old friend visits and warns them to flee to the mountains, she must leave her old life behind. On the journey, an attack leaves her father mortally wounded. He entrusts her into the care of the exiles and on his deathbed makes a shocking confession.

Struggling with self-doubt, Tei joins the exiles search for their new Sentinel who is the only person capable of restoring the fading magic. But mysterious Masked Riders are hunting the Sentinel too, and time, as well as hope, is running out.

Against mounting odds it will take friendship, heartache, and sacrifice for the exiles to succeed, but is Tei willing to risk everything to save the island magic?

If you like character-based fantasy, then you’ll love The Lost Sentinel – book one in the Silent Sea Chronicles trilogy.

Author Suzanne Rogerson

Suzanne lives in Middlesex, England with her husband, two children and a crazy puppy. Her writing journey began at the age of twelve when she completed her first novel. She discovered the fantasy genre in her late teens and has never looked back.

Giving up work to raise a family gave Suzanne the impetus to take her attempts at novel writing beyond the first draft, and she is lucky enough to have a husband who supports her dream – even if he does occasionally hint that she might think about getting a proper job one day.
Now an author of four novels including the completed Silent Sea Chronicles trilogy Suzanne hopes the dreaded ‘W’ word will never rear its ugly head again!

She loves gardening and has a Hebe (shrub) fetish. She enjoys cooking with ingredients from the garden and regularly feeds unsuspecting guests vegetable-based cakes.

Suzanne collects books, is interested in history and enjoys wandering around castles and old ruins whilst being immersed in the past. She likes to combine her love of nature and photography on family walks, but most of all she loves to escape with a great film, binge watch TV shows, or soak in a hot bubble bath with an ice cream and a book.
