Author Interview with Kari Bovee

LR: What was it about the historical figure of Annie Oakley, that led you envision a fiction series where she was not just a sharp shooter, but also solved murder mysteries in her spare time?

KB: Like most of us I had heard about Annie Oakley, but she was always portrayed as sort of a one dimensional character in the plays and movies I’d seen, so she really didn’t interest me much. It wasn’t until I watched a PBS American Experience special on her that I realized what an amazing woman she really was. She had endured quite a bit of hardship in her early life, but was smart, talented, and lived by a pretty strict moral code. I thought she’d make an amazing detective—someone who was concerned about truth and justice, so the idea was born!

LR: How does the writing process work for you? Do you schedule a time every day, work madly when inspiration hits or ?

KB: My writing process used to be quite haphazard. But now that I have several books out that need attention in the form of marketing and advertising, I find my days get compressed really quickly. A few months ago I started a regimen where I get up at 5:30 am and write until 9:00 or 10:00 am. It really helps me to avoid distractions.

I work on my marketing, replying to emails, and other business related stuff for about two hours in the afternoon. It’s worked out really well and I find I’m a lot more productive. Plus, I then have more time for my horses, my family and friends.

LR: How does your home and its environment influence your writing? To what extent?

KB: I love being at home. We moved to a small-ish, rural village four years ago. We live on four acres in a hacienda/mission style home. My office is huge with a high, beamed ceiling (the beams came from an old railroad trellis), a kiva-style fire place, and antique wooden floors that came from an old ice house in Santa Fe, NM. The windows are huge and I can look out of the French doors and see my horses grazing in the pasture.

I find the architecture and the property surrounding our home so inspirational, comforting, and quiet, it’s easy for me to get lost in my own imagination, which is a wonderful thing. The challenge (I think for all writers) is to not let everyday responsibilities and stress encroach on such a sacred environment.

LR: Do you think self-revelation is part of the writing process?

KB: Yes. I think it is inescapable. I believe that writing, like art, comes from the heart and soul of a person. There is a certain level of emotional intimacy that comes with the creative process. Writers, artists, and singers have to dig deep to create an emotional resonance with their audience. It seems impossible to me to divorce that kind of raw sharing with self-revelation.

LR: List some of your all-time favorite books and talk about why you like them.

KB: I enjoy a lot of classic literature, particularly 19th Century literature. Some of my favorite novels are: 1) Vanity Fair by Makepeace Thackery—Becky Sharp is a most fascinating character. Ruthless yet practical. 2) Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, because who doesn’t love a tragic gothic romance? 3) Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, because I love the way the characters have to get out of their own way to find happiness.

More contemporary books are Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, and Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, two vastly different novels but the world building in both is excellent—makes you feel like you are really there. I also like the works of Tana French and Elizabeth George because they are amazing mystery authors!

LR: What else would you like readers to know?

KB: If readers subscribe to my newsletter, they will get the prequel novella to the Annie Oakley series titled Shoot like a Girl (eBook). Just click here:

Shoot Like A Girl
