Author Interview with Kellyn Roth

LR: While writing Beyond Her Calling, which character could you strongly relate to?

KR: Honestly, I didn’t relate greatly to Ivy or Jordy. Both of them were loosely based off two of my friends (in real life), and neither of my friends are very like me—nor are their struggles. Jordy is a bit more like me in thought process, though.

I probably related most strongly to Ena Owen. Ena and I deal with grief in the same way, for one—we get really upset, then we’re mostly okay with it afterwards. We’re both no-nonsense with children, as well, though not without leaving room for creativity (as long as it’s within reason). I wish I were Aunt Daphne, but I’m afraid I never quite shall be.

LR: What was the most difficult thing about writing Beyond Her Calling?

KR: I’m tempted to say the Scottish accents. Those were hard to pin down! How much do you write? Is the dialect correct for the region? Will the reader even be able to decipher what they’re saying? It was a delicate balance.

But I think it was also very hard to portray a grownup Ivy. At least, it took me a while to pin it down!

LR: When your readers finish Beyond Her Calling, what’s one thing you pray they take from the story?

KR: I hope they take away that everyone is valuable and beloved by God and everyone can succeed at whatever they put their mind to if they’re relying on Jesus Christ as their strength. But our plans may not be His, of course, and we need to accept that.

In truth, I’ve been enjoying exploring different aspects of God’s plans for us in this series! It’s a heavy theme, but it’s not a particularly dark one, which is a nice as the next several books in The Chronicles of Alice and Ivy will feature some challenging topics, including but not limited to adultery, miscarriage, suicidal thoughts, depression, and the aftermath.

LR: How do you develop your characters?

KR: It’s really hard to describe because I feel like I do it a bit differently every time. But I definitely spend the most time on my characters! I write up backstories and ramble about them in my notebooks and documents for pages and pages. I sometimes will use a form, but more often than not I’ll just write my ideas for them down freehand.

LR: What is your best advice for getting rid of writer’s block?

KR: Make yourself write. If writing is going to be your job, you have to learn to write even when you don’t feel like it. And sure, writing is a form of art … but it’s also your job. So do your job! It may not come easily, and the words may be trash, but if you write even when you don’t want to, youll eventually teach yourself to write no matter what.

📖My Review📖

The Dressmakers Secret is book one in this Historic Christian Romance series. Whole the rest of the series focuses on Alice and Ivy, the first book gives a wonderful backstory and tells the story of their mother Claire Chattoway and their family when the twins were eight years old.

In 27 chapters, Roth tells a wonderful story. There are some parts that I felt was an absolute rollercoaster, spacifically chapter seven, the rest, while moderately paced, slowed down a bit for me.

My favorite character is definately Claire. Her inner thoughts throughout The Dressmakers Secret were sad and sometimes dark, but she remained outwardly strong and didn’t break down when the unthinkable happens. I like that she is an active character.

On the other hand, my least favorite character has to be Phil Knight. He wasn’t the worst villain in christian romance history, but I couldn’t find redeemable qualities in him. To me he was a sad person.

I enjoyed Roths writing and the twists and turns in the last two chapters threw me a little. I was surprised at the end and epilogue.

I enjoyed reading The Dressmakers Secret and would recommend it to any reader that enjoys christian historical romance.
