MEET THE AUTHOR:
Melissa Stuart lives in Los Angeles, California with her family, their English Mastiff, Gucci, and their pony, Luna! Melissa and her husband stay busy traveling all over the country with their boys’ hockey teams. She loves being a Hockey Mom and watching her boys chase their dream of following in their dad’s footsteps to play in the NHL! Her happy place is with her little girl, Stella, at the barn surrounded by horses and their precious Luna. Sun Valley, Idaho is her family’s favorite summer getaway destination. When they’re there, Melissa feels most inspired to write sitting by the river, surrounded by mountains and nature! Her dream of becoming a published author for the first time came true in early 2021, as she shared her story “Find Your Sunshine” in a book co-written by 10 other inspiring authors—all of whom were sharing stories about shining their light and becoming difference makers in the world! Melissa hopes this story will inspire children to always look up. She wishes to teach them that true joy comes when we shine our own light and show kindness to others. That’s the secret to finding our sunshine!

Author Interview with Melissa Stuart
LR: If You are a mom writer, how do you balance your time?
I have 3 kids and afternoons are jam packed with after school activities and sports, so I find that the only time I’m able to focus and write without any distractions, is when they are at school and the house is quiet.
LR: Where did you get the inspiration for your story?
MS: After my grandmother passed away, yellow butterflies sometimes appeared above me when I was horseback riding. Same with my little girl when she would ride. It brought such comfort when they appeared during a sad time.
A horse named Luna soon became part of our family after spending a year looking for the perfect one. I knew when I saw her picture that she was the one we had been searching for! She matched the picture I had hanging up in my house that I purchased after my grandma passed. I will always believe she was meant to be ours.
LR: In the book you state that the horse Luna and little girl Star are a match made in heaven.
Can you explain?
MS: When I saw her picture and her name, I knew without a doubt she was meant to be ours! Luna means moon and my daughter’s name is Stella meaning star! I felt like it was meant to be.
LR: Do you have another profession besides writing?
I was in the fitness industry for 15 years with big plans to open my own studio, when my back ruptured after a day of horseback riding. I had to spend the next 2 years having multiple spinal surgeries. Writing this book became the most therapeutic and healing experience during the hardest time in my life.
LR: What makes this book different from other Pony/ Butterfly stories?
I feel like it’s different from other books because it’s based on a true story and all the characters in it are real. It is my heartfelt story that played out right before my eyes.
After all the setbacks and spinal surgeries and not being able to do the two things I loved (teaching fitness classes and riding horses), I turned my pain to purpose and wrote about the magical healing that horses and butterflies can bring to those lucky enough to be surrounded by them.
I wanted to send a message to other people who may be going through a storm or stuck under a dark cloud, to always look up and to lend a hand and show kindness to others.

Book Review for Butterflies from above by Melissa Stuart
Butterflies from Above is a children’s book for young readers around three to seven years old. It has 33 pages with nicely illustrated pictures.
This childrens book is cute and I love the art. I also like the calm color pallette. I think it conveys the overall tone very well, but I wish it had a little more story to it. I think the main story fine. I love that star gets luna and the idea of empathy for those around you that are sad. It is a great lesson for new readers to learn.
I believe the main flow in the book followed having a friend, losing a friend, then showing empathy to others that are sad. I know that young readers will not necessarily miss anything especially if it is read to them in a good way, but comparing it to other young readers children’s booksI have read, I wish it had a little more story.
I think the youngest readers will enjoy this book because of pictures and if the person reading it can make it engaging and entertaining.
I liked the ending that brought back the butterflies. Overall, I am rating this one a three out of five. I would still recommend Butterflies from above for young readers as I like the art style and the main theme in the book is a great lesson to teach children.
I hope you enjoyed todays post. If you have a young reader that may enjoy this short children’s book, think about getting them a copy with the links in the post.

Just a side note, I had a butterfly follow me in my garden about a year ago, and thought it was the best thing in the world. Seeing them just lifts your spirits!
